Top 5 Advantages And Disadvantages of Cloud Computing

As we are advancing in technology daily, most companies, brand and industries are looking for better tech solutions for themselves. Most companies and industries are finding cloud services a better and trust-able platform for them.

Most companies want to deliver their digital services through a network, either it can be a local network or cloud based network system.

Not everything comes perfect, Cloud based network system or cloud service using cloud computing have their own pros and cons. In this post, we will look into some of the most important advantages and disadvantages of cloud computing you must know in 2019 if you want cloud computing for your services.

First of all you know about Cloud Computing !

Cloud computing

What is Cloud Computing ?

Cloud Computing is a term used for when hardware and software are used for resource purposes over the internet. The name Cloud computing is given to due to its cloud shaped symbol which is used to represent cloud computing in flowchart diagrams of internet.

Cloud computing has been further divided into three categories :

Infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS)
Platform-as-a-service (PaaS)
Software-as-a-service(SaaS)

The Cloud computing resources allows users to use light to heavy resources of hardware and software remotely. A user only needs a computer and internet access for accessing cloud computing resources.

So in a normal fashion, we can say cloud computing is a type of computing based on internet rather than local resources.

Users can buy their plan from the cloud computing resource provider with their flexibility and use and configure those resources according to their needs after logging into their  account.

How does cloud computing works ?

There are a number of data centers or servers all around the world which stores, manages, processes, computes the information in real-time and provide all of this stuff to the users over the internet.

These data centers or web servers for cloud computing are managed by cloud computing providers like Amazon for their AWS services and Microsoft for Microsoft Azure.

Most of the time different stack of  cloud computing web servers are used for different purposes,

For example, for managing databases there are database servers and for computing processes there are computing servers.

Advantages of cloud computing

Now, we have gathered information about cloud computing, let's see its advantages and disadvantages and how will it affect the cloud computing processes.

1. Cloud infrastructure provides data security

Data security is a very big concern for all the companies and brands. No company wants to lose their reputation due to data breach in their systems. Security of data in cloud computing is a major factor.

These cloud computing service providers put some advance security systems into their servers that ensure the perfect encapsulation of the data of the user.

The cloud computing service providers give some basic security protection and furthermore they also add some most advanced protection systems to enhance the data security and reduce the chances of data breach.

2. Reduces the cost consumption

As in cloud computing infrastructure, you dont have to set up a web server of your own and handle each and every task. You dont have to buy hardware for the setup. This reduces the cost consumption in cloud computing environment dramatically.

The cloud service companies provide their services at very cheap rate compared to local setup.

Also, if anything goes wrong in the server you don't have to pay for the new equipment. It is all handled by the service providers.

3. Keeps everything in control

As an administrator or the authorized in-charge you can take control of what sensitive data you want protected.

If a company is using cloud computing services for their computing network. The authorized user can choose which data he may want to keep away from the staff and also he may provide any data to his staff with usage rights and accessibility to the staff. So there is no need of copies of data in the system for different staff members. A single data file can be used and moderated by different staff members.

4. Provides Data Recovery

If you save everything on your local system it might be possible that in a disaster scenario your local computer may be damaged and all data will be lost. This approach for saving data is not an good option for companies keeping sensitive and important data.

If all the data is uploaded to cloud systems the data will be available anywhere in the world to you. You just need a computer with an internet connection.

Even if anything happens to your local computer, all the data will be accessible from the cloud.

Some cloud service providers make copies of data to their data centers. So that even if a data center is affected or if its down. The data can be extracted from other data centers.

5. Provides mobility to the resources

Cloud services are provided through internet so it can be accessible anywhere in the world with a computer with internet connection. You can access any file anywhere.

Also there is not for the shifting of the hardware resources when you shift from one place to the another.

Cloud computing makes data and computing resources available anywhere, anytime you want.

Disadvantages of cloud computing

Now we have learned about pros of cloud computing. Let's look at some of its cons

1. Downtime can occur

Although downtime in an cloud computing based infrastructure is very rare. But there were many instances when these short downtime of cloud service providers cost them millions of dollars.

Also in these downtime you never know how much time it is going to take to troubleshoot the error. Power outages in data centers can downtime.

2. Dependent to internet

As cloud computing service are based on internet. To access all the data and computing resources you need to have an good internet connection.

If you need any data you need to be connected to the internet to access cloud computing resources.

3. Difficulty changing vendors.

Changing you cloud vendors may be a difficult task to achieve. Changing your cloud vendor from one to another can create complexities in the systems.

Hosting and running applications on different vendor after switching can create mis-configuration in the systems,

And sensitive data can be left vulnerable due to these mis-configuration in the cloud computing systems.

4. Limited control to the systems

Cloud services provider give a great level of control to the cloud system and resources but still they do not provide the level of controls which companies want.

They do not provide complete access to the back end processes and tasks thus some companies might find it little less controlable.

5. Vulnerability

Even though cloud computing services have a great amount of security enforcement but there might still be gaps and holes where hackers can exploit and steal some sensitive data from the database or interrupt the computing systems.

Although it is very rare but still you data can be at risk if the cloud service providers are not making enough efforts to make the system secure and protected.

Conclusion : Advantages and disadvantages of cloud computing

Many companies are moving forward to the new age of cloud networks and cloud service providers are making more and more efforts to make it more beneficial to the users and themselves.

These were some of the key points you need to know before opting in for cloud based computing infrastructure.
